Short answer: hardly any. Of the 15 truck stops we've checked between Denver and Kansas City, one lists a fitness room. Most stops do have somewhere to walk, though: a park in town, an on-site dog area, or a store you can walk to.
This page lists them by exit. We tell you which routes have mapped sidewalks and which don't, because that matters more than the distance.
Quick answer
- Fitness room: only Petro Salina (exit 252), which lists a "STAYFIT Outdoor Fitness Room". We haven't confirmed the equipment or access.
- Walk on mapped paths: Flying J #619, Aurora (exit 285) to Morrison Nature Center, and Love's #300, Bennett (exit 304) to a park in town. Both are about 1.8 to 2.1 km each way, mostly on mapped paths, so they're too long for a 30-minute break.
- Short loops on site: dog areas at Love's in Abilene, on the Kansas Turnpike and in Bates City, plus a pet area at Petro Colby.
Why 30 minutes
The CDC's NIOSH page for long-haul truck drivers recommends at least 30 minutes of physical activity, 5 days a week. It also says three 5- to 10-minute walks a day help.
The FMCSA's hours-of-service rules require a break of at least 30 consecutive minutes after 8 cumulative hours of driving. An on-duty, not-driving period can count. Check the rule for your own operation. This page is about using the break, not about compliance.
Walks by exit
Distances are walking routes from OpenStreetMap, one way, checked online on November 1, 2026. "No mapped sidewalk" means some or all of the route is on a street where the map shows no sidewalk. It doesn't mean there isn't one, but we can't tell you it's safe. None of these routes cross I-70.
| Stop | Exit | Where to walk | One way | Route notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Flying J #619, Aurora, CO | 285 | Morrison Nature Center | 2,060 m | Mostly mapped sidewalks and footways (about 100 m without) |
| Love's #300, Bennett, CO | 304 | Park in town (unnamed on the map) | 1,780 m | Mostly mapped paths (about 310 m on lot roads without sidewalks) |
| Love's #300, Bennett, CO | 304 | King Soopers (errand walk) | 290 m | Most of the route (about 200 m) has no mapped sidewalk |
| Pilot #920, Colby, KS | 54 | Walmart Supercenter (errand walk) | 1,550 m | Most of the route (about 1.3 km) has no mapped sidewalk |
| Love's #455, Ellis, KS | 145 | Playworld Park | 1,220 m | About 365 m with no mapped sidewalk, including Washington St / KS 247 and a bridge |
| Love's #455, Ellis, KS | 145 | Memorial Park | 1,270 m | About 305 m with no mapped sidewalk |
| Petro Salina, KS | 252 | Park nearby (unnamed on the map) | 650 m | Most of the route (about 610 m) has no mapped sidewalk |
| Pilot #903, Salina, KS | 252 | Thomas Park | 950 m | Most of the route (about 670 m) has no mapped sidewalk |
| Sapp Bros., Junction City, KS | 295 | The Bluffs Park | 530 m | Whole route has no mapped sidewalk |
On-site areas
These are listed by the operator. They're good for a few laps without leaving the lot.
| Stop | Exit | What's listed |
|---|---|---|
| Petro Colby, KS | 53 | Pet area (a dog park is mapped about 120 m from the stop) |
| Love's #732, Abilene, KS | 272 | Dog park |
| Love's #175, Kansas Turnpike | MP 188 | Dog park |
| Love's #809, Bates City, MO | 31 | Dog park |
Some other stops also list a dog area (Love's #300 Bennett, Petro Salina, TA Limon and TA Oakley), but we haven't recorded where it is. See each stop page.
Stops with no walk we can recommend
Flying J #621 and TA Limon (exit 359), TA Oakley (exit 76) and Flying J #659 in Salina (exit 253). Map data showed no park or store within a reasonable walk. At Flying J #659 the nearest park meant walking through the I-70 interchange, so we removed it.
Plan a 30-minute break
- Out and back: pick somewhere about 10 to 12 minutes away, then turn around. Of the walks above, The Bluffs Park in Junction City (530 m) and the park near Petro Salina (650 m) are the closest. Both are mostly or entirely on streets with no mapped sidewalk, so check the stop page notes first.
- Laps: if the walk is too far or the route has no sidewalk, do laps of the dog area or the edge of the lot instead, away from moving trucks.
- Split it: NIOSH says even three 5- to 10-minute walks a day are beneficial. One at fuel, one at a meal and one before bed adds up.
Stay safe
- Walk in daylight where you can. Wear something bright when you can't.
- Use crosswalks. Don't cross ramps or highway interchanges on foot.
- Keep your phone and keys on you, and let dispatch or family know if you're leaving the lot.
For stretches and exercises you can do in or next to the cab, the St. Christopher Fund has a guide.
What we're not sure about
- We checked routes in map data only. No one has walked them.
- Whether the Petro Salina fitness room is open, and what equipment it has.
- Operator amenity lists can be out of date.
