A grocery store lets you buy fruit, vegetables, yogurt and plain protein at grocery prices. Between Denver and Kansas City, though, very few truck stops have one close enough to walk to.
Of the 15 truck stops we've checked, 2 have a grocery store within walking distance. A third has one a short drive away. Everywhere else, plan to stock up ahead of time.
Quick answer
- Closest: Love's #300, Bennett, CO (exit 304). King Soopers is about 290 m away on foot, though most of that (about 200 m) has no mapped sidewalk.
- Reachable on foot, but check the route: Pilot #920, Colby, KS (exit 54). Walmart Supercenter is about 1.55 km away in map data, but most of the route (about 1.3 km) has no mapped sidewalk.
- Drive, not walk: Petro Colby (exit 53). Walmart is nearby, but there's no mapped walking route.
Park at the truck stop, then walk
Store parking rules for trucks vary by location and change often, so we don't say whether any store allows truck parking. Parking legally at the truck stop and walking over avoids the question.
| Stop | Exit | Store | One-way walk | Route notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Love's #300, Bennett, CO | 304 | King Soopers | 290 m | Most of the route (about 200 m) has no mapped sidewalk. No I-70 crossing |
| Pilot #920, Colby, KS | 54 | Walmart Supercenter | 1,550 m | Most of the route (about 1.3 km) has no mapped sidewalk. No I-70 crossing |
Routes come from OpenStreetMap, checked online on November 1, 2026. No one has walked them. Check store hours with the store before you go.
Gaps to plan around
- Bennett to Colby: after King Soopers in Bennett (Colorado exit 304), there's no walkable grocery we know of until Colby, Kansas (exit 54). That's about 200 interstate miles, through Limon.
- East of Colby: we didn't record a walkable grocery at any of the other Kansas or Missouri stops we checked, from Oakley through Bates City.
In practice, if you want grocery-store food for the run across Kansas, buy it in the Denver area or at Bennett, or in Colby if you're heading west.
A no-cooking cab basket
The CDC's NIOSH page for long-haul drivers suggests packing healthy meals, snacks and drinks, and looking for healthier options at truck stops. For ideas that keep in a cab cooler, the VA's healthy eating tips for truck drivers is a good place to start. Common ideas:
- Whole fruit that travels well (apples, bananas, oranges)
- Baby carrots, snap peas, cherry tomatoes
- Single-serve yogurt or cottage cheese (keep cold)
- Hard-boiled eggs, string cheese, pouches of tuna or chicken
- Unsalted nuts, plain popcorn
- Water, unsweetened tea, sparkling water
If you can't get to a store
Several chains on this route publish nutrition for their fresh grab-and-go food. See Healthier choices at Love's on I-70. Each stop page also lists the picks we could source.
What we're not sure about
- We checked walking routes in map data only, not on site.
- Store hours and stock.
- We may have missed small grocery stores that aren't on the map.
